Relevance Is Rented

In 1986, Tony Robbins launched his first national TV infomercial to promote his “Personal Power” audio program.

He used long-form direct response television to speak directly to viewers…30-minute spots that ran late at night, early in the morning, and during off-hours on cable networks across the country.

With big-name endorsements, compelling testimonials, and relentless repetition, he became one of the most recognized self-help figures in America.

By 1991, just one of his infomercials had generated over $60 million in sales.

Robbins dominated late-night TV throughout the 80s, 90s, and into the early 2000s.

His strategy was brilliant and aggressive.

It worked.

He built a global empire and grew his net worth to over $600 million.

He moved into live events, bestselling books, high-end coaching, and corporate consulting.

He didn’t just market…he saturated.

And yet…

This week, for the second time this year, I asked someone under the age of 30 if they had ever heard of Tony Robbins and they said… NO

They had no clue who I was talking about.

This floored me…how is it possible?

The man spent decades on TV.

He has more than 7.5 million Instagram followers.

Over 6.5 million Facebook followers.

2.3 million YouTube subscribers.

And more than 1.1 million followers on TikTok.

He has a bigger platform than most global CEOs or celebrities.

But even still…

If you stop showing up in the right channels, in the right ways, you become irrelevant.

The Takeaway: No matter how much you’ve marketed yourself…how much time, money, energy, or success you’ve had…it doesn’t last forever.

Not in this attention economy.

Professionally I have been rebuilding this year…and as I get ready to launch a new season of the Resilient Advisor Podcast, I’m hoping that I am still relevant!
